BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity baseball team’s magical
season came to an abrupt end on Wednesday when the Seahawks fell to Parkside,
4-3, after leading the game, 3-1, going into the final two innings.

With Dominick Favazza cruising on the mound and the
Decatur offense scoring just enough to maintain a comfortable lead over the
Rams through five innings, it appeared the Seahawks were headed to the next
round in the Class 2A-East region tournament. However, the Rams rallied to beat
the Seahawks with a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth
inning and won the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh.

With the bases loaded, Parkside hit a grounder to second
that could have resulted in an inning ending double play, but Decatur could not
turn two and the winning run scored from third. The heartbreaking loss did
little to tarnish a great season under first year manager Rick Ferro, whose
team finished at 17-4.

Decatur’s got off to a great start in the state playoffs
on Monday, thrashing visiting Wicomico, 10-0, in a game reduced to five innings
by the slaughter rule, to advance in the Class 2A-East Region tournament.

Decatur beat Wicomico twice in the regular season in
tight, one-run games, but the Seahawks left nothing to chance in the
quarterfinal round of the state regional playoffs against the Indians at home
on Monday. Decatur combined an offensive outburst with a steady starting
pitching effort by Dominick Favazza to win the game 10-0 and advance in the
tourney.

The
Seahawks, who finished the regular season with a gaudy 16-2 record, earned the
number three seed in the 2A-East Region, while Wicomico came in as the sixth
seed. Favazza earned the win on the mound, going five innings while allowing
just two hits and striking out nine.
