Sherryl Horan Sheppard

OCEAN PINES – Sherryl Horan Sheppard, 59, died Sunday, March 30, 2008 at her home in Ocean Pines.

Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Doris Horan. She graduated from high school in Baltimore County. She led a successful business career and later moved to the Ocean City area where she became part owner and manager of the Spanish Main Hotel. She was a certified real estate agent and was very successful in the rental and sales departments.

Her hobbies included decorating, gardening, traveling and reading. She was a cat lover and did volunteer work for “Town Cats.”

She is survived by her beloved husband, Edward; daughter, Krista Baker; son, John Dalkowski, IV; son-in-law, Thomas Baker; stepchildren, Edward Sheppard, Jr., Jackie Sheppard and John Sheppard; granddaughters, Lauren and Kate Baker; and step-grandchildren, Matthew and Joslyn Sheppard.

Services were held.

David Allen Webb

SALISBURY – David Allen Webb, 39, died Monday, March 24, 2008 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

Born in Salisbury, he was the son of Joyce Ann Webb Gravenor of Pittsville and Linwood Joseph Gravenor and his wife, Ollie Jane Gravenor of Snow Hill. Also surviving is a brother, Brian Joseph Gravenor of Pittsville, and his daughters, Brianna Leigh Gravenor and Kallie Rose Gravenor; a sister, Jennifer Ann Gravenor of Ocean City and her daughter Daisya Vue Johnson; and several cousins.

Webb had worked as a tradesman and had been employed with Johnson Laundry Service of Pittsville.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 5, at 1 p.m. at Stephen Decatur Park in Berlin. In lieu of flowers donations are requested to be sent to the David Allen Webb Memorial Fund, PNC Bank, 309 N. Washington St., Snow Hill, Md. 21863. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home.

Grace Langley Harrison

BERLIN – Grace Langley Harrison, age 100, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at her home in Gull Creek Retirement Community in Berlin.

Born in New Jersey she was the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth Langley. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard W. Harrison.

She is survived by a daughter, Lois Ferguson and her husband, Albert of Berlin, and a son, Robert L. Harrison and his wife Mary Louise of East Brunswick, N.J. She was the adored grandmother of Laurie Williams and Cheryl Miller and great grandmother of Tracy and Jamie Williams, William Ferguson and twins Ryan and Grace Ferguson. She was preceded in death by a grandson, William Ferguson.

Harrison was a longtime resident of Bayonne, N.J., where she managed the office of the Boy Scouts of America, from whom she received the Golden Fawn Award. She served as president and founder of the Evening Department of the YWCA. She had been a resident of Gull Creek Retirement Community in Berlin since 1998.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Mary Margaret McNulty

BERLIN – Mary Margaret McNulty, 83, died Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Berlin Nursing Home in Berlin.

Born in Parkton, Md. she was the daughter of the late Cornelius O’Leary and Mabel McFadden O’Leary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Leo McNulty, Jr.

She is survived by a son, Joseph Leo McNulty, III and his wife Carole of Baltimore; a daughter, Kathleen Paez and her husband Gilberto of Machester, Md.; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Services were held.

Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home.

Inez C. Hall

BERLIN – Inez C. Hall "Speedy", age 105, died Monday, March 31, 2008 at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury.

Born in Cisco, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Jacob R. and Mattie Virginia Carpenter. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Hall.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Bassett; two granddaughters, Vicky Gray and her husband Herb and Lynda Wilkins; two great grandsons, George L. Ralph, III and his wife Margot and Samuel H. Gorewitz and his wife Christine; two great-great granddaughters, Hailey and Rachel Ralph; and a sister, Ellen Willis.

Services were held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Coastal Hospice at the Lake, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802 or the charity of your choice.

John Walter Smith

SHOWELL – John Walter Smith, age 71, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at his home in Showell.

Born in Showell, he was the son of the late Preston and Wilsie Layton Smith. He is survived by his wife, Stella Marie Smith; two sons, John Smith, Jr. of Bishopville and Stuart Wayne Smith and his companion Cathy Donohue of Whaleyville; two daughters, Shirley Richards and her husband Ricky of Lincoln, Del. and Mary Bloxom and her husband David of Snow Hill; six grandchildren, Kenneth Smith, Cheyanne Lloyd, Melissa Gordy, Stuart Wayne Smith, II, Phillip Bloxom and Zachary Smith; three great grandchildren, Christopher Wilson, Lorie Lloyd and Kaitlin Smith; a brother, David Smith of Millsboro; and two sisters, Mary Phillips of Millsboro and Phyllis Bare of Frankford. There are numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation followed his death. A private burial will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home.

Orphus Myron Land

OAKEOLA, Pa. – Orphus Myron Land, the son of late Elizabeth Land and the late Cummings Purnell, was born on Oct. 7, 1961 in Salisbury. He departed this life on Feb. 25, 2008 at his home in Oakeola, Pa in Darby Township.

He grew up in Berlin and Ocean City and received education at Stephen Decatur High School. As a young man, he joined Tyree A.M.E.  Church in Berlin where he enjoyed his Christian experience.

He was employed as head chef at Paul Revere Restaurant in Ocean City. After moving to Pennsylvania, he worked as head chef at Old Country Buffet in Springfield, Pa. He loved cooking and after working all day, he would come home and cook a special meal for his family.

He also loved to fish and enjoyed sports. He loved playing softball with the First Baptist Church of Oakeloa. He was excited about playing with the softball team this year.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Tina M. Miller-Land; one son, Laver Crawford of Norfolk, Va.; one daughter, Lynita Land of Snow Hill; grandchildren, Vershawn, Tevon and Shyasia; four sisters, Jovon (Wallace) Smith of Whaleyville, Md., Margret Lenoard of Upper Marlboro, Md., Joyce Smith of Oklahoma, Beatrice Spence of Berlin: and three brothers, Patrick Land of Salisbury, Ivory Smith, Sr. of Maryland, Francis Spence of Berlin. He also leaves his favorite, Aunt Margret Fooks, and several niece and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday April 5 at Tyree A.M.E. Church in Berlin.

Phyllis Van Newkirk

WILMINGTON, Del. – Phyllis Van Newkirk, age 81, died Sunday, March 30, 2008 at her home in Wilmington, Del.

She was the daughter of the late Henry Chandler Davies and  Florence Kersey Davies. She was preceded in death by her husband Harry Wade Van Newkirk in 1985 and is survived by her two daughters, Leslie Tabo and  her husband Stanley and Kerrie Ann King all of Wilmington, Del.; a granddaughter, Mary Ann King of Berlin; a brother, Chandler Davies of  Lewes, Del.; a sister, Barbara Malloy of Ruskin, Fla.; and several nieces,  nephews and friends.

Services were held. Arrangements are by the Burbage Funeral Home.
