Worcester Prep Student To Play D-1 Lacrosse at Colgate University

BERLIN- Worcester Prep standout scholar-athlete Meegan Jayne Smith last week signed a letter of intent to accept a scholarship to play Division I lacrosse at Colgate University in upstate New York.

Smith, a key player on Worcester Prep’s outstanding girls’ varsity lacrosse team for four years, has also lettered in soccer and basketball at the Berlin private school, but her first love has always been lacrosse since picking up the sport at the age of 7 and coming up through the local youth programs such as Beach and Greene Turtle Lacrosse.

In addition to Smith’s outstanding career on the playing fields and courts at Worcester, her academic resume is equally impressive. She is an AP Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society. She is also an Academic All-American and has been named All-Conference in the ESIAC and All-Bayside South First Team in lacrosse.

Smith chose Colgate from several options and opportunities, including Davidson, in North Carolina, which also recruited her heavily. In the end, Smith said she chose Colgate because of its outstanding academic reputation and its up and coming women’s lacrosse program.

“Academically, it’s outstanding and the coaches are great,” she said during an official letter-signing ceremony yesterday. “The coaches have told me I’ll have an opportunity to play and have an impact right away, which was certainly a deciding factor in my decision.”
