William Joseph Thomas

OCEAN PINES – William Joseph Thomas, age 79, died on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa. he was the son of the late Stanley Thomas and Rose Marie "Anna" Matesich Thomas.

Thomas was a US Navy veteran retiring after 24 years of service having achieved rank QMC. He served in both Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the Navy he went on to open Thomas Construction, which he owned and operated for 25 years. He was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, a former Grand Knight and District Deputy Navigator with Knights of Columbus, and a member of Boggs-Disharoon American Legion #153.

He is survived by two sons, Timothy Charles Thomas of Ocean Pines and Patrick Joseph Thomas of Ocean City; one brother, Jack C. Thomas and his wife Dorie of Arizona; two sisters, Rose Marie Thomas of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Millie Mehilick of Nevada; three grand children, Jason, Nicole and Patrick, Jr.; four great grand children; one brother-in-law, Jerry O’Brien and his wife Janet; and several nieces and nephews.

Martin Luther King

BERLIN – Martin Luther King, age 61, passed away on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 at Atlantic General Hospital. Born Oct. 15, 1947 in Gumboro, Del., he was the son of the late Oliver King and Frances Hudson King.

King had worked as a carpet installer for many years. After retirement, he enjoyed horses, hunting, fishing, gardening, yard work and watching Nascar. He especially loved watching The Price Is Right everyday. Most of all he enjoyed his home and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Hilda King; a son, Matthew King; two

sisters, Rose Mitchell of Millsboro and Liz King of Laurel; a brother, Tom King of Willards; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Berlin Fire Company, 214 N. Main St., Berlin, Md. 21811.

Bernard R. Bond, Jr.

SNOW HILL – Bernard R. Bond, Jr., age 62, passed away at home in his sleep after a short bout with cancer. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Bernard R. Bond, Sr. and Helen Dunnock Bond.

He was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph High School in Baltimore and a 1968 graduate of Towson University. He was a school teacher in Wicomico County. In 1983 he switched careers to become a police officer with the Ocean City Police Department. In 1989 he was sworn in as Special Investigator for the Worcester County State’s Attorney’s Office, where he distinguished himself as an outstanding narcotics investigator. He retired in September 2007.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Helen Bond of Sacramento, Calif., and his daughter, Sarah Allen and her husband Paul and their daughter Grace Katherine Allen all of Lexington, S.C.

George Thomas Miller

NEWARK – George Thomas Miller, age 76, died on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 at his home in Newark. Born in New York, he was the son of the late Mathew Miller and Lucy Vasti Miller.

Miller moved to Maryland in 1954 from New York. He had worked for 21

years as a mechanic for Berlin Milling Company. He had served in the United States Marine Corps from 1950-1954. He was very proud of his grandson Jesse Bradford who became a Marine in 2008.

He is survived by his beloved wife Barbara Miller; four daughters, Nancy Miller and Annette Miller both of Newark, Teresa Senft of Ocean City, and Donna Ralston of New Hampshire; three sons, Matthew Miller of Eden, Md. and David Alberts and Steven Orth both of Newark; one brother, Mathew A. Miller of Red Hook, N.Y.; one sister, Betty M. Lutz of Rhinebeck, N.Y.; a special nephew, Terry Miller; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

William John Pike

OCEAN PINES – William John Pike, Jr., age 82, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late William John Pike, Sr. and Alice Buck Pike.

Pike had been a components draftsman with Burroughs Corporation for many years. He was a WWII Army Veteran, member of the Community Church of Ocean Pines and was an avid golfing and bowling enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores E. Hankinson Pike; three sons, William John Pike, III of Moodus, Conn., Robert David Pike and his wife Lisa of Williamsburg, Va., and Bruce Joseph Pike and his wife Donna of Coventry, R.I.; and two granddaughters, Samantha and Stephanie Pike.

Franklin Lee Minor

BERLIN – Franklin Lee Minor, 72, of Berlin, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008. Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Minor and Mildred Minor.

Minor had worked in construction for many years. He is survived by his long time companion, Mary Lou Carpenter; three sons, Franklin Lee Minor, I, Odan-Thor Zeus Minor and Benjamin Minor, all of Berlin; three daughters, Karen Marie Minor, Eva Lee Minor and Patricia Ann Minor; one step-daughter, Mary Ellen Carpenter of Berlin; and many grandchildren.

Minor’s body was donated to the Anatomy Gifts Registry Program. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Gerald Kenneth Mackey

BERLIN – Gerald Kenneth Mackey, passed peacefully into eternal life on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. He was born in Williamston, SC on June 19, 1934, the son of the late S.E. and Annie Laura Cox Mackey.

He worked in a cotton mill in Anderson, S.C., before joining the United States Army in 1945. He served proudly and honorably in the Army until 1966, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class (E7). After leaving the service, he began a 29-year career in banking, first at Union Trust Company and retiring in 1996 from the First National Bank of Maryland (now M&T Bank) as an Operations Executive.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Eileen Stevens Mackey; five children, Toni A. Reese of Tampa, Fla., Jerry L. Adams of Eldersburg, Md, Rose Ann Smith of Westminster, S.C., Jenny L. Rawls of Columbia, S.C. and Cynthia D. Mackey of Ocean Pines. He was the beloved "Pop" to six

grandchildren, Adam Smith, Erin Reese, Bradley Mullen, Alexander Rawls and Rachel and Jenna Adams. Also surviving is a brother, Wilton Mackey of Anderson, S.C., and a sister Reta McAlister of Winston-Salem, N.C.
