Mallards Ride Big Third to Win over Dragons

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s men’s varsity lacrosse team took care of business this week with a pair of wins including a 11-2 pasting of ESIAC rival Salisbury School last Thursday and a convincing 13-7 win over Sussex Tech on Monday.

Last Thursday, the Mallards allowed Salisbury School to hang around in the game before taking charge of the contest with a dominating third quarter. Justin Butler took an assist from Brad Harris and fired in the back of the net to increase Worcester’s lead to 5-1 just 15 seconds into the third. With just under nine minutes remaining in the third, Harris worked the ball from behind the Dragon goal to set himself up for another goal to make it 6-1. Butler scored again in an extra-man situation with a laser from the right side to make it 7-1 with just over seven minutes left in the third.

Butler scored again just15 seconds later to make it 8-1 with 6:56 left in the third. Finally, Ryan McGuire finished off the explosive third quarter with a fast-break goal with 42 seconds left to extend the lead to 9-1. At the start of the fourth, Worcester’s Alex Ternahan scored just 15 seconds into the period to push the lead to 10-1. Salisbury finally broke its second half scoring drought with a goal at the 11:43 mark in the fourth to cut the lead to 10-2, but the Mallards finished off the game with a late goal to win 11-2. Butler led Worcester with five goals, while Harris added three.

On Monday, Worcester continued its winning ways, beating Sussex Tech on the road, 13-7. Harris led the Mallards with four goals while McGuire added three. Worcester closes out the regular season with a road games against St. Mark’s and Delmarva Christian.
