New Doctor Joins PRMC

SALISBURY – Peninsula Regional Medical Center and its Peninsula Regional Medical Group are pleased to welcome Halim Charbel, MD to its network of physicians.

Charbel, a specialist in Gastroenterology, received his medical degree from Saint Joseph’s University School of Medicine in Beirut, Lebanon. He completed both a residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. and is board-certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

In addition to providing a complete array of gastrointestinal services, Charbel specializes in Endoscopic Ultrasound, a valuable diagnostic tool that combines the benefits of both endoscopic and ultrasonic components in the detection of cancer as well as other upper and lower GI diseases.

Not currently offered at any other facility on the Delmarva Peninsula, EUS is now available exclusively in the region under the direction of Dr. Charbel in the Endoscopy Center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Other areas of interest for Charbel include Interventional Endoscopy and Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis).

“We would like to welcome Dr. Charbel to Peninsula Regional and are very excited that he brings to the community the capability to perform EUS procedures,” said Thomas Lawrence, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs at the Medical Center. “EUS allows physicians to be very precise in diagnosing and treating esophageal, stomach, pancreatic, lung and rectal cancers. Of the cases where cancer is suspected from previous MRI or CT scanning, EUS allows verification directly at the point of the cancer, which means it is caught earlier and the patient can begin treatment sooner.”
