William Daniel Sweeney

BERLIN – William "Bill" Daniel Sweeney, age 80, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009 at his home in Mystic Harbor.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., he was the son of the late Edna Pauline and William Patrick Sweeney.

In 1946, at the age of 17, he joined the United States Navy and actively served for 22 years, a career for which he was most proud. After retiring, he began his next career as Director of Safety and Security for Sears, Roebuck and Co. Prior to moving to the Eastern Shore, he was a dispatcher for Anne Arundel County Police Department, retiring in 1990. He then worked as a dispatcher for Ocean Pines Police Department and was a starter for Ocean Pines Golf Club where he was able to enjoy his golf.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carole Ann Sweeney; his daughter, Jennifer Carole Sweeney; and caregivers Cathy Davenport and Julia Pitts, who have given him loving and compassionate care for the last seven years of his long illness.

It was his request that no formal services be held and that his ashes be scattered at sea. The family will honor his request as arrangements can be made.

Donations in his memory may be made to Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, Md. 21802. Arrangements are being handled by the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin.

Doris Lee Adkins Quillen

BERLIN – Doris Lee Adkins Quillen, age 82, died on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009 at her home in Berlin.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Mary Holloway Adkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Quillen.

Quillen was a member of Buckingham Presbyterian Church in Berlin and was an avid gardener.

She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Anne Carper and her husband Stephen; a sister, Edith Dryden; and one granddaughter, Katherine Carper. She is also survived by her nieces, nephews, a host of friends, and one very special caregiver of the last year and a half, Diana Wasson.

A funeral service was held yesterday at the Burbage Funeral Home in Berlin. Rev. Alex Ayers officiated. Interment was in Buckingham Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Buckingham Cemetery Fund, c/o Roaslee James, 103 Burley St., Berlin, Md. 21811.

Stephen Francis Caruana

SELBYVILLE – Stephen Francis Caruana of Selbyville lost his battle with cancer Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009.

Born in Paterson, N.J., he was a son of the late John and Margaret DeStefano Caruana.

Steve was a decorated World War II Army veteran and received a Purple Heart during the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he transferred to the Army Reserve and retired as a major.

He went on to a distinguished career in business when he became the vice president of sales and marketing at General Battery Corp. in Reading, Pa. At his retirement from the company, he attained a lifelong dream and became the owner of a book store in North Carolina.

He has made his home on the Eastern Shore for the past 15 years.

He is survived by his four sons, Ralph Caruana, MD, of Martinez, Ga., Nick Caruana, MD, of Washington, Alex Caruana, CPA, of Salisbury and Max Caruana, who is at Salisbury University; one brother, John Caruana of Los Angeles; and one sister, Mary Jane Sawyer of Auburn, N.Y. He is also survived by three grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leo Caruana.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church, 9903 Coastal Highway, Ocean City, where friends may call from 1-2 p.m. Burial with full military honors will be Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at 11 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Eternal Word Television Network, 5817 Old Leeds Road, Irondale, Ala. 35210.
