OCEAN CITY – La Hacienda at the South Gate of Ocean Pines has filled a void in the area by offering a piece of Ocean City nostalgia on the main land.

After eight years of searching for the perfect second location for La Hacienda, owner Bill Herbst opened his Ocean Pines location last November.

Approaching La Hacienda on Route 589 it’s impossible not to notice a tropical atmosphere of a deck bar and seating sitting over top a lake.

“It is a nice quiet place,” Herbst said of the deck that sits 35 to 45 guests. “It lends itself nicely to the area, and people are very happy with it. There really isn’t anything around here in the area like it.”

Herbst added that the deck remains a comfortable atmosphere even during the heat of the summer as was the case this week.

“We have fans that keep the air moving out there so it is actually pretty comfortable even on the hottest of days,” he said.

On Thursday and Friday from late afternoon to sunset, 5-9 p.m., there is live entertainment on the deck. On Thursdays through August, local reggae musician Kaleb Brown plays and on Fridays the schedule switches featuring musicians like Mike Bennett or Mike Smith. Herbst added that a third day of entertainment is planned to come in the near future. Featured this weekend will be Bennett on Friday and Brown, of course, will be back next Thursday.

“Keep your eye on the booking schedule,” Herbst said. “We are going to add to it and make some changes.”

On the inside, Herbst completely made over the establishment adding fresh colors to walls and local artist John Iampieri, came in and painted south western scenery to add to the restaurant’s Aztec theme.

Inside and out on the deck, the full menu is available as well as light fare offerings. Happy hour is every day, 4-7 p.m., along with $1.25 tacos. Other happy hour specials include $5 La Ha Ritas, $3 rail drinks, $2 domestics, $3 imports and $5 wines.

Specifically, Herbst was quick to stack up his margaritas against anyone.

“Don’t forget one of the finest margaritas you will ever have, you will find it right here,” Herbst said.

Herbst was happy to say business has been going well in Ocean Pines and was pleased with the business level La Hacienda has reached at the new location just seven months in.

The location is convenient to residents in Ocean Pines, Bishopville, Berlin and West Ocean City and offers a little piece of paradise off the island.

“Hopefully, it will just get better from here on out,” he said.

La Hacienda at the South Gate of Ocean Pines opens its doors at 4 p.m. and does not close until the last guest leaves.

La Hacienda specializes in Mexican cuisine and prepares sizzling hot delicious food right to your table. The menu features a great selection of appetizers along with delectable fajitas, burritos, enchiladas and traditional combinations.

La Hacienda’s Ocean City location has been in operation on 80th Street since 1979.
