Delivery Man Helps Police Catch Teen Vandals

OCEAN CITY - Two Pennsylvania men were arrested in a north Ocean City residence early last Friday after an alert witness observed the pair smashing the windows of several vehicles on the parking lot of the old mall on 94^th Street and another on the municipal lot on 100^th Street and helped resort police track the suspects.

Shortly after 4 a.m. last Friday, the OCPD received a call from (ITALICS)Baltimore Sun delivery driver Kevin Brown, who had witnessed two suspects break the windows out of five vehicles in the mall parking lot on 94^th Street. Brown briefly chased the suspects and reported to police they had been seen running north across the parking lot.

Another witness told the police the two suspects, later identified as Matthew Lanyon, 18, of Shavertown, Pa., and David Caruso, 18, of Dallas, Pa., had entered a residence on Old Landing Rd. Police then obtained a search warrant for the residence and went inside. Once inside, the officers questioned several young men in the residence and were able to determine just Lanyon and Caruso were responsible for the damage.

During a search of the suspects' room, police discovered marijuana as well as a camera reportedly stolen from one of the vehicles. The investigation revealed the five vehicles damaged at 94^th Street were commercial vehicles owned by Ocean City resident Rob Greenebaum and Century Carpet Cleaning. Another car belonging to a visitor to Ocean City from Pennsylvania sustained damage from being kicked. In all, over $10,000 damages was done to all of the vehicles combined.

Greenebaum, who has lived in Ocean City for almost 30 years, praised the witness for getting involved and chasing away the suspects before following them and reporting their descriptions and whereabouts to the Ocean City EMS Communications Section. He also praised all of the OCPD officers who participated in finding and arresting the suspects and later the investigation.

'Tenacious good police work and forensic crime solving had this case broken before I even woke up,' he said. 'The two young men linked to my attack were also charged in badly damaging an Ocean City visitor's car parked several blocks away and damaging a landlord's rental property. That's three separate crimes of felony stature solved in hours, not days.'

Lanyon and Caruso were each charged with seven counts of malicious destruction, malicious destruction scheme, possession of drug paraphernalia, misdemeanor theft and rogue and vagabond. Each was released after posting $50,000 bonds.
