Worcester Girls Take Two Wins

BERLIN- Worcester Prep's girls' varsity lacrosse team enjoyed a successful week, beating Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) rival Salisbury School on the road on Monday before routing visiting James M. Bennett at home on Tuesday.

The Mallards got out to a big lead against Salisbury School on Monday and held on for what turned out to be a fairly tight game against the Dragons. Jackie Wangel scored three goals and dished out three assists in the win, while Tory Dickerson added two goals. The win extended Worcester's lead in the ESIAC standings to two games.

The Mallards were back in action on Tuesday against Bennett and had a much easier time with the Clippers. The game started slow with neither team able to get much going on offense, but Worcester got it cranked up in the latter part of the first half and led 8-0 at the intermission.

Worcester scored four straight goals to start the second half and extended the lead to 12-0. Hillary Roughton scored at the 19:21 mark of the second half to make it 10-0, and Caroline Wyatt scored less than a minute later to make it 11-0. Caitlin Whalan ended the scoring barrage for Worcester with a goal to extend the lead to 12-0.

Bennett finally broke the ice with a goal off a penalty shot with 12:32 left in the game and added another goal three minutes later to cut the lead to 12-2. Worcester answered with a goal by Caitlin Miller with 7:31 left in the game. Bennett scored its third and final goal of the game at the 6:13 mark to make it 13-3, which is how the game ended.

Mackenzie White led Worcester with four goals. Worcester goalkeeper Melanie Leiner, who was pitching a shutout until Bennett scored on a penalty shot halfway through the second half, finished with 12 saves. Worcester's record now stands at 4-2 on the season. The Mallards play old rival Cape Henlopen on the road this afternoon.
