Mallards Snuff Dragons to Stay Unbeaten

9/26/2008 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Things couldn't be much better for Worcester Prep's men's varsity soccer team right now with the Mallards beating old rival Salisbury School, 4-0, this week to remain unbeaten on the season and one of their own being named among the top 100 young players in the country.

On Tuesday, the Mallards cruised by Salisbury School, 4-0, for their fifth win on the season against no losses. The only non-win on Worcester's record thus far is a 1-1 tie with Sussex Tech in the second game of the season. Since then, Worcester has reeled off four straight wins, there only real test coming last Friday with a narrow 3-2 win over Gunston.

While the Mallards have been impressive as a team, one of their own earned a significant personal accomplishment this week. Junior Martin Sanchez was selected as a member of the 2008 Maryland ODP team and was invited to participate in the regional player pool. The pool brings together roughly 150 outstanding soccer players from the region including the mid-Atlantic area as well as some international players.

At pool play, Sanchez was selected as one of the top 25 players and earned a spot on the Region I team. Four regional teams of 25 players were selected from pools around the country. Sanchez' team will compete in national camps and inter-regional events across the country throughout the year as well as an international tournament in Europe.

The U.S. National Team coach and staff will be present at the events to observe, train and identify players for placement in the national pool and possibly even the national team. In addition, most major colleges will have representatives at the events to recruit the player, who are considered the top 100 players in the country.
