BERLIN- The Stephen Decatur and Worcester Prep varsity golf teams will renew their friendly neighborhood rivalry with the second annual “Battle of Berlin Challenge Cup” with the first round of matches set for today at the Ocean City Golf Club.
The two local schools competed for the first “Battle of Berlin Challenge Cup” two years ago just before the start of the fall season and, based on the success of the inaugural event, decided to make in an annual fixture on the late summer prep golf calendar. The varsity teams of both schools will compete in a modified Ryder Cup format with the cup, and bragging rights for the entire year, going to the victors.
The top ten players from each school will compete in the series’ first 27-hole event this afternoon, weather permitting. The first nine holes will feature an alternate shot format, while the second nine will be played in a two-person best ball with nine holes of stroke play finishing up the first day’s action. Decatur is 2-0 in the series and holds the coveted “Battle of Berlin” trophy, although Worcester will attempt to wrest away the hardware from the Seahawks starting this afternoon.
