Seahawks Off to Fast Start

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team got its 2011 campaign off to a great start last weekend, thumping Washington, 52-6, on the road in the season opener.

Led by senior running back D.J. Kee, who scored three touchdowns, the Seahawks had their way with the Jaguars last Friday, building a 31-6 lead by halftime and coasting to its first win of the season. Kee got Decatur on the board early and often with a 34-yard touchdown run on the opening series. After Washington fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Kee dashed 20 yards for his second touchdown to make it 14-0.

Decatur’s Sean Boyle than hit Tim VanVonno with a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0. James Mapp punched in the Seahawks’ fourth TD of the half to make it 28-0. Jared King then hit a field goal to push the lead to 31-0.

The Jaguars did not roll over, however, and put together a 68-yard drive just before the half to cut the lead to 31-6. Any momentum Washington hoped to gain from the late score just before the half evaporated when Kee returned the opening kickoff of second half 82 yards for a touchdown to extend the lead to 38-6.

Mapp later dashed 33 yards deep into Washington territory to set up his second touchdown of the game. Mapp carried it over from two yards out to make it 45-6 in favor of the Seahawks. Finally, the Decatur defense got into the scoring act in the fourth quarter. A Washington pass attempt was ruled behind the line of scrimmage and Decatur’s Patrick Phillips scooped up the live ball and carried it in for the Seahawks’ last score of the game.

Next up for the Seahawks is another road game against always-tough Indian River in Delaware tonight. Decatur opens at home next Friday against Kent Island.
