Seahawks End Queen Anne’s Streak

BERLIN- Lightning struck twice for the Stephen Decatur varsity football team last weekend after the Seahawks beat Queen Anne’s, 34-31, in overtime to end the Lions’ 37-game regular season winning streak.

Queen Anne’s last lost a regular season game back in 2007 and had run off 37 straight since then. In 2007, Decatur was the last team to beat the Lions in the regular season, a 30-27 win also in overtime. The Seahawks added a bookend to the streak last Friday, beating Queen Anne’s, 34-31, in overtime on a one-yard touchdown run by D.J. Kee.

Queen Anne’s scored first to take an early 7-0 lead, but Decatur answered quickly on a touchdown run by Kee, who finished the game with 175 yards and three touchdowns. A 12-yard touchdown run by James Mapp, followed by a 15-yard touchdown pass from Teron Tyre to Brian Ford put the Seahawks up 20-7 in the second quarter, but the game was far from over.

Queen Anne’s scored on a 59-yard touchdown run just before the half to cut the Decatur lead to 20-14 at the intermission. The Lions then took their first lead of the game on their first possession of the third quarter with a 48-yard touchdown run to go ahead, 21-20. Decatur answered with a one-yard TD run by Kee and a two-point conversion just before the end of the third quarter to retake the lead at 28-21.

Queen Anne’s offense moved the ball during the fourth quarter, but twice turned it over, killing drives. Finally, with just 49 seconds remaining in the game, the Lions scored a touchdown and converted the extra point to tie the game at 28-28 and send it into overtime.

The Lions got the ball first in overtime and was moving down the field when a quarterback sack by Decatur’s Colin May stalled the drive and forced a Queen Anne’s field goal to take a 31-28 lead. Decatur then went on a methodical drive capped off by a one-yard touchdown plunge by Kee for the dramatic 34-31 win, which ended the Lions’ 37-game regular season winning streak.

With the win over Queen Anne’s on the Lions’ homecoming, the Seahawks improved to 3-2 on the season. Decatur will host its own homecoming tonight against Easton and must avoid a letdown against the Warriors, who appear to be greatly improved this year.
