10/14/2011 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity golf team stayed on a major roll this week, finishing second at the state quarterfinal tournament at the Hyatt in Cambridge on Tuesday to qualify for next week’s state semifinals at the University of Maryland.

On Monday, the Seahawks won their fourth regular season tournament of the year, beating rival Parkside by 16 strokes in the process. Decatur shot a team-low 168, while the Rams finished in 184. Nikki Rafer led the Seahawks with a tournament-low 40, which won her the medallist honors on the day. Joe Iacona was close behind, finishing in 41, while Andrew Urban shot 42, Delaney Iacona shot 45 and Chris Barschow shot 52.

On Tuesday, the Seahawks picked up where they left off, finishing in second with a team score of 326, just two strokes behind Kent Island, which won the tournament with a 324. Again, Rafer led the way for Decatur, shooting a 75, which was the lowest score in the field, male or female. Joe Iacona shot a 77, the lowest male score in the field, while Delaney Iacona shot a personal best 85 and Urban finished with an 89. Those four will represent Decatur as a team in the state semifinals next week in College Park, while Audrey Affelder qualified for the state semis as an individual with a 93.
