BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team fell to Wicomico, 37-7, last week, putting a dent in the late season playoff push, but it appears the Seahawks control their own post-season destiny with one game to go.
Wicomico (8-1) took an early 7-0 lead on Decatur, but the Seahawks tied the game a short time later on a 14-yard touchdown run by D.J. Kee after blocking a WiHi field goal attempt. The Indians scored 17 more points in the second quarter to take a 24-7 lead into halftime.
Decatur went 80-plus yards on its first possession of the third quarter, but a turnover resulted in no points. Wicomico took advantage of the Seahawk turnover and scored again to take a 31-7 lead. The Indians added a late score to finish out the 37-7 win over their Bayside Conference rivals.
The loss dropped the Seahawks from third place in the state Class 3A-East standings to fifth place. The top four teams from the region make the state playoffs, but Decatur can clinch the last spot with a win over county rival Snow Hill tonight. Decatur now has 36 points, behind Hammond (40) and Howard (39). However, Hammond and Howard play each other in their season finale, meaning one will have a loss. If Decatur beats Snow Hill, the Seahawks will finish with 41 points and clinch the final 3A-East playoff berth.
