Decatur Girls Beat Howard to Advance

11/04/2011 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team took care of business this week in the second round of the state Class 3A-East region tournament, beating Howard, 2-1, at home on Tuesday to advance in a region suddenly devoid of top seeds.

The Seahawks, seeded third in the region, played a scoreless first half with Howard on a blustery Tuesday afternoon before getting on the board in the second half. During the second half, the Seahawks got goals from Tori Whigham and Liz Rougcher to edge Howard, 2-1, while Ashley DePaul was impressive in goal with 22 saves.

With the win, the Seahawks move on as the highest remaining seed in the region after a run of upsets. Top-seeded River Hill lost to ninth-seeded Atholton, while second-seeded Centennial lost to 10th-seeded Reservoir and third-seeded Bennett lost to fifth-seeded Mt. Hebron. The Seahawks will face Reservoir at home this afternoon in the region semifinals.
