Worcester Girls Drop Heartbreaker

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s girls’ varsity soccer team lost a heartbreaker last week, falling to Saints Peter and Paul on penalty kicks in the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) tournament final.

The Mallards beat Salisbury Christian, 6-2, in the ESIAC semifinals last Wednesday to advance to the championship game. Lillian DiNardo led Worcester with three goals, while Alex Bruder scored twice and Tierney Loeser added a single tally. The win propelled Worcester into the ESIAC championship game against long-time rival Saints Peter and Paul.

In the championship game, Worcester got on the board first on a goal by Frankie Willing about halfway through the first period. The Sabres scored a short time later to pull even at 1-1, which is how the first half would end. In the second half, DiNardo scored with about 20 minutes left in the game to put Worcester ahead, 2-1. However, the Sabres tied the game at 2-2 with just over 13 minutes remaining and regulation ended in a tie.

After two tense overtime periods during which both teams had opportunities, the score remained 2-2, meaning the ESIAC championship was going to come down to penalty kicks. With the sun drooping down and the temperature dropping, Saints Peter and Paul won the ESIAC title, outscoring the Mallards, 3-1, on penalty shots.
