Feds Support Berlin Hike, Bike Initiative

BERLIN -- The National Park Service this week announced an award of technical planning assistance to the Lower Shore Land Trust for its Walkable-Bikeable Berlin initiative through its Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program.

The project will identify opportunities to create and enhance pedestrian and bike-friendly options that link Berlin parks, residential areas, schools and retail amenities. The project supports efforts on the local, state and federal level to promote healthy living through outdoor exercise and family recreation, and encouraging young people to engage in outdoor recreation through the use of trails and safe routes to walk and bike to school.

The RTCA will extend technical support to the Lower Shore Land Trust and  Grow Berlin Green partners, the town of Berlin and its residents and businesses as they work together to develop a master plan for a Walkable-Bikeable Berlin. In addition to the Resolution of Support by the Town of Berlin, letters of support for the project were received from U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, Assateague Island National Seashore and the Worcester County Tourism Department.

“This effort will not only benefit residents of the Town of Berlin, but also our many guests and residents throughout neighboring communities and the region,” said Berlin Mayor Gee Williams.
