Decatur Boys Cruise in Opener

12/09/2011 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team got off to a good start this week, beating North Dorchester, 69-55, on the road on Tuesday.

With just three returning players from last year’s 8-15 team, the Seahawks start the season with a lot of uncertainty as they attempt to improve on last year’s mark and continue to move the program forward under second-year coach Mark Engle. On Tuesday, the Seahawks got a glimpse of what might be with a resounding 69-55 win over North Dorchester on the road in the season opener.

Decatur is deep at guard with all three returning players at the position. The Seahawks will rely on seniors Teron Tyre and Drakar Purnell, along with junior Jesse Engle, all guards, to distribute the basketball and put points on the board. With most of the experience at the guard position, the Seahawks will play up-tempo on both ends of the floor.

After the opening win over North Dorchester on Tuesday, the Seahawks will likely find out in a hurry how much they have improved. Decatur played Bennett at home yesterday in a game played too late to be included in this edition and will face Mardela away next Tuesday and Wicomico at home next Thursday.
