Worcester Girls Take Lumps Early

BERLIN- Worcester Prep’s young, but talented girls’ varsity basketball team took some early lumps, losing its first three games of the season, all of which were on the road.

The Mallards are extremely young with no seniors and just three juniors on the roster this season to go along with four sophomores and three freshmen. The team is facing obvious growing pains as evidenced by the 0-3 start to the 2011-2012 season, but the upside is optimistic.

The Worcester girls fell to Greenwood Mennonite, 52-36, in the season opener last Tuesday, followed by a 42-24 loss to Salisbury School and a 39-18 loss to Salisbury Christian on Monday, all on the road. Despite the early outcomes, wins should start coming for the Mallards, who are short on experience, but long on potential.

The three juniors, including Alex Bruder, Molly Marshall and Meredith Smith, were important parts of last year’s team and are providing leadership for the young Mallards. Other returning players include Lilly DiNardo and Alison Greer, while newcomers include Sophie Brennan, Molly Soule, Cecily Sass, Hannah Showell and Frankie Willing, all athletes in other sports who are expected to make an immediate contribution this season.
