BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team beat Mardela, 69-51, on Tuesday to improve to 2-1 on the young season.
The Seahawks’ record now stands at 2-1 on the year after a pair of wins against Bayside Conference foes. Decatur beat North Dorchester, 69-55, in the season opener on the road last Tuesday. Last Thursday, Decatur lost to Bayside South rival Bennett, 65-55, at home as Drakar Purnell led the Seahawks with 15 points.
On the road against Mardela on Tuesday, the Seahawks got balanced scoring from all over the floor in a 69-51 win over the Warriors. Decatur faced Wicomico at home last night in a game played too late to be included in this edition. The Seahawks face Kent Island and Pocomoke at home next Monday and Wednesday to wrap up the first portion of the season for the holiday break.
The following week, Decatur will compete in the second annual Governor’s Challenge Holiday Basketball Tournament at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center in Salisbury. The inaugural Governor’s Challenge last year featured the top prep teams from Maryland and Delaware competing against each other for regional bragging rights and the format will basically be the same this year although the competition between the Maryland and Delaware teams will be called the M&T Bank Cup.
Other segments of the same tournament will include will feature teams competing in the East Coast Challenge and the Dr. Pepper 10 Cup. Decatur will compete for the M&T Bank Cup. The Seahawks will face Delaware’s Sussex Central on December 27 at 6:30 p.m., followed by another tournament game on December 30 against Delaware powerhouse Woodbridge at 2 p.m.
