12/23/2011 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- The 4th Annual Reindeer Run 5K, sponsored by Live Long Fitness, was a huge success last weekend with hundreds of runners competing in the annual holiday race through the town of Berlin.

Over 250 runners competed in the Reindeer Run 5K in Berlin last Saturday, topping last year’s total of 141 for the biggest turnout in the history of the annual event, which is steadily becoming a fixture on the holiday events season in the area. The race started and finished at the Atlantic Hotel on Main Street with course winding its way through the downtown area. Competitor raced down Main Street around the Worcester Prep campus and the Northern Worcester County Athletic Complex before finishing back at the hotel.

For the second year in a row, Berlin’s own Dave Rovansek was the top overall finisher, coming in at 18:51.3, while Lindsay Buckman was the top female finisher at 20:44.4. The top 10 included Rovansek, Matt Keller, Buckman, Craig Southland, Andrew Murrell, Tim Switzer, Tom Pellinger, J.R. Ward, Steve Balk and Brett Danver.

With the town decorated, the event is the perfect kick-off to the holiday season. As an added bonus this year, jingle bells were distributed to the runners, many of whom were decked out in their holiday finest.
