Decatur Boys Split in Governor’s Challenge

1/06/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

SALISBURY- Stephen Decatur held up its end for the most part in the Governor’s Cup Holiday Basketball Tournament in Salisbury last week, gaining a split after losing its opener, but when the dust settled, Maryland fell to Delaware, 13-10, in the annual event.

The Seahawks last week competed in the inaugural M&T Bank Cup, featuring some of the top teams from Maryland’s Eastern Shore against a strong field of teams from Delaware with bragging rights and some symbolic desserts on the line. Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley issued a challenge to Delaware Gov. Jack Markell with a Smith Island cake and a Delaware peach pie at stake.

The Seahawks lost their tournament opener, falling to Sussex Central, 58-54, in a tight game last Tuesday. After the first day, Maryland teams went 5-3 against the Delaware teams and appeared to be course to collect the coveted M&T Bank Cup. However, Delaware started collecting wins as the competition rolled on all last week.

Decatur avenged its opening round loss with a decisive 51-35 win over Delaware’s Woodbridge in its second game as Jesse Engle led the Seahawks with 16 points. However, Delaware eventually came out on top in the tournament with a 13-10 mark against the Maryland teams.
