SNOW HILL- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity basketball team took the title in the John Coleman Christmas Tournament last week, sweeping two games in the annual holiday event behind a strong performance by Abby Schorr.
The annual tournament, named for longtime Worcester County Public Schools Administrator John Coleman, has become one of the highlights of the holiday basketball tournament schedule over the years. This year’s tournament featured the girls’ varsity teams from the three county public schools, Decatur, Snow Hill and Pocomoke, along with an at-large invitee, Arcadia of Virginia.
In the opening round last Tuesday, the Seahawks edged Pocomoke, 37-32, to advance to the finals. Schorr led Decatur with 10 points, while Katie Purnell added eight points and 10 rebounds. Wynesha Brittingham led Pocomoke with 10 points. On the other side of the bracket, Snow Hill beat Arcadia, 47-23, as Shequan Bailey scored a game-high 23 points. Snow Hill’s win set up a title game with Decatur.
Last Wednesday, Decatur beat Snow Hill, 60-56, to take the 2011 Coleman Tournament title. Schorr led all scorers with a remarkable 35 points, while Purnell pitched in 14 points. Bailey again led Snow Hill with 28 points.
