Decatur Cagers Drop Pair to Indians

1/27/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity basketball teams got swept by Wicomico in home and road games on Tuesday with the boys getting routed by the Indians, 71-45, and the girls losing another tough one, 61-59, in overtime.

The Decatur boys continued their season-long penchant for winning one and losing one with a 71-45 loss to Wicomico on the road on Tuesday. Josh King and Drakar Purnell each scored 13 points in the loss, while Larry Ennis led WiHi with 14. The loss to Wicomico on Tuesday came on the heels of a 66-64 win over Mardela last Thursday and continued a trend for the Seahawks this season. Decatur’s overall record now stands at 7-8 on the year, and only twice did the Seahawks win two in a row or lose two in a row.

Meanwhile, a four-game losing streak continued for the Decatur girls with a tough 61-59 loss to Wicomico on Tuesday. Abby Schorr led the Seahawks with 17 points, while Katie Purnell grabbed 18 rebounds. The loss was the second in a row by two points or less for Decatur, which lost to Mardela, 51-50, last Thursday.

During the four-game losing streak, Decatur has been extremely competitive, but hasn’t been able to find a way to finish. During the streak, the Seahawks lost to Parkside, 46-42; Bennett, 66-55; Mardela, 51-50, and now Wicomico, 61-59 in overtime.
