SHOWELL -- Local law enforcement officials this week are looking for the suspect who struck a bicyclist on Route 113 near Jarvis Rd. in Showell early last Saturday morning and fled the scene, leaving the bike in the road for passing motorists to discover and find the victim.
Shortly after midnight last Saturday, Maryland State Police troopers and the Showell Fire Department responded to the area of Route 113 and Jarvis Rd. for a report of a victim, later identified as Phillip Edward Cougill, 47, of Showell, who was struck while riding his bicycle along the shoulder of the highway. Several witnesses reported observing Cougill’s bicycle lying in the shoulder of the roadway with its red strobe light attached to the rear of the seat still flashing.
The flashing strobe light drew attention to Cougill, who was discovered lying in the roadway next to a guard rail just prior to Jarvis Rd. When MSP troopers arrived, a med-evac helicopter was immediately dispatched to respond due to the severity of Cougill’s injuries. He was subsequently transported to PRMC in Salisbury where he remained in intensive care this week.
The motor vehicle that struck Cougill fled the scene. Scrape marks and other evidence at the scene indicated Cougill was riding on the shoulder of the road when he was struck. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Maryland State Police Berlin barrack at 410-641-3101.
