Seahawks, Eagles Face Off in Rivalry

11/02/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity football team lost to Wicomico, 19-6, last weekend, effectively ending any hope of advancing to the state Class 3A-East tournament this year.

The Seahawks never got it going offensively against at home last Friday and fell to the visiting Indians, 19-6. With the loss, Decatur’s record fell to 4-5 on the season. The Seahawks will have the opportunity to end the season on a positive not this weekend against Worcester County rival Snow Hill with a .500 record at stake.

Decatur always plays Snow Hill in the season finale each year in an alternating home-home series and this year the annual rivalry game will be played at Decatur tonight. Almost every year, the annual matchup has playoff implications for one or both of the teams, but this year, the game will be played for county bragging rights for the next several months.

Last year, Decatur rolled the Eagles, 56-20, to finish 7-3 and advance to the state playoffs. In 2010, Decatur beat Snow Hill, 23-13, to advance to the postseason. Snow Hill won in 2009 and Decatur won in 2008.

At 4-5, a postseason berth for Decatur has long since passed and the game will have little effect on the standings for Snow Hill. At 7-3 already, the Eagles are comfortably in third in the state Class 1A-East standings and will advance to the playoffs regardless of the outcome of its rivalry game with the Seahawks.
