Decatur Boys Halt Skid at Five

2/17/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s boys’ varsity basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak this week, beating St. Michael’s, 71-53, on Tuesday.

Something had to give for the Seahawks, who had lost five in a row heading into Tuesday’s home game against St. Michael’s. Decatur had last won back on January 19, a narrow 66-64 win over Mardela, although they were highly competitive during the streak. On Tuesday, the Seahawks got off the snide with a 71-53 win over the Saints. Drakar Purnell led the offense with 24 points, while Tevin Andrews added 15 points and Chase Sams grabbed nine rebounds.

Last Thursday, Decatur’s streak reached five with a 43-41 loss to county rival Snow Hill. Drakar Purnell led the Seahawks in that contest with 13 points. Decatur played Parkside last night at home in the regular season finale in a game played too late to be included in this edition. Going into last night, Decatur’s overall season record was 10-12, including a 4-11 conference mark.
