BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity wrestling team clinched the Bayside regular season title last week, sweeping Easton and North Caroline, both of which were unbeaten, in a tri-meet last Friday to come out on top in an epic battle between the conference heavyweights.
Something had to give last Friday when Decatur, Easton and North Caroline faced off in a regular season finale pitting three teams unbeaten in Bayside competition. The Seahawks entered the tri-meet with an overall record of 14-3 including a 12-2 record in matches that count toward the state regional duals and an 11-0 mark in the Bayside Conference.
The Seahawks took care of business, beating Easton, 30-25, and North Caroline, 42-21, to secure another conference regular season championship. The conference heavyweights will likely cross paths again in the two-day Bayside Tournament next weekend. In the Easton match, Decatur got wins from Corey Tobias in the 125-pound class, Matt Doherty (135), Bernie McGarry (140), Josh Bargar (145), Danny Kominos (152), Bryce Smith (160) and Danny Miller (215). Against North Caroline, the same Seahawk wrestlers won their respective matches as did Dylan Drew at 285 and Nick McLoota at 103.
The Seahawks competed in the state regional duals yesterday in a match played too late to be included in this edition. Decatur entered the regional duals as the four-seed and was slated to take on top-seeded Old Mill with Bel Air (3) and familiar foe Reservoir (2) on the other side of the bracket. If the Seahawks were successful in the 4A-3A East region duals, they will attempt to repeat as state dual meet champions this weekend.
