Seahawks Edge Warriors in Thriller

BERLIN- Decatur’s boys’ varsity lacrosse team edged visiting Easton, 10-9, on Wednesday in a drizzly, dreary season opener for both teams.

While light rain fell and temperatures dipped into the low 40s during the game on Wednesday evening, the action on the field was hot and furious as both teams went back and forth in the seesaw contest. Decatur got on the board first on a goal by attackman Brendan Wagner from the right side off a rebound for a 1-0 lead at the 6:13 mark in the first quarter.

With just over three minutes left in the first, Decatur’s Curtis Snyder worked the ball around from behind the goal and fired a shot past the Easton keeper to extend the lead to 2-0, which is how the period ended. In the second quarter, both teams started to swap goals with Decatur maintaining an edge. The Seahawks led 5-2 with just over three minutes when the Warriors got its offense going.

Easton scored at the 2:48 mark to cut the lead to 5-3, and added another goal just 36 seconds later to narrow the gap to 5-4. Decatur’s Erik Geiser scored with 20 seconds left in the second quarter to extend the lead to 6-4, but Easton wasn’t finished yet. The Warriors won the ensuing face-off and the Easton middie streaked down the middle of the field and fire an hard shot past the Decatur keeper to cut the lead to 6-5, which is how the first half ended.

Both teams continued to exchange goals in the second half in what turned out to be heavyweight fight between the two Bayside powerhouses. In the end, it was Decatur that came out on top with the narrow 10-9 win. Wagner led the Seahawks with five goals and an assist, while Snyder scored twice and dished out two assists. Geiser finished with a goal and an assist.
