BERLIN- The Berlin Junior Dolphins of the Salvation Army 'Red Shield' League won a gritty 13-7 victory over the Salisbury Black Knights last Thursday to reach the league championship game for the first time in their seven years of existence.
The Junior Dolphins squared off last Thursday in a defensive struggle with an opportunity to face the Wicomico Vikings in the championship game. The Berlin-Salisbury tilt promised to be a defensive struggle and it did not disappoint. Berlin gave up an early score to fall behind, 7-0, before the defense settled in.
The score remained 7-0 at the half, but it appeared Berlin's patience in the running game was beginning to wear down the Black Knights. Both teams slugged away at each other until Berlin's Andrew Borradile broke off a 42-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. A successful extra point tied the score at 7-7 with a full quarter still to go.
Late in the fourth quarter, Berlin drove deep inside Salisbury territory for the first time in the game with a first-and-goal situation from the four-yard line. Salisbury turned back Berlin three times before the Dolphins broke through on a touchdown by Tayevon Mills to take a 13-7 led with a little more than a minute to play in the game. Salisbury fumbled the ensuing kick-off and Berlin killed the clock and earned a trip to the league championship game to face the unbeaten Wicomico Vikings.
