Berlin Little Leaguer Throws No-Hitter

BERLIN- Berlin Little Leaguer Hayden Snelsire achieved one of the rarest feats in baseball at any level on Monday, throwing a no-hitter for the Major League Yankees in a 7-1 win over the Phillies.

The Phillies entered Monday’s game with the Yankees on a major roll, having won three straight and averaging five runs and 10 hits per game during the streak. However, they ran into a buzz saw with Snelsire on the mound for the Yankees on Monday.

In the first inning, the Phillies’ first batter reached on an error and later scored, but that was the only run Snelsire gave up all day. The Yankees scored three runs of the their own in the first, all with two outs, which proved to be all the runs Snelsire would need.

Snelsire went on to throw a no-hitter, allowing just three walks and hitting another batter. Otherwise, he was nearly perfect and dominated the Phillies’ lineup at times. According to Phillies’ manager Bill Wheatley, who called it one of the most impressive and dominating performances he has ever seen at that level, Snelsire had great control, changed speeds and hit his marks on the corners. Snelsire is just 10 years old and was making only his fourth start ever when he pitched his no-hitter on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Berlin Little League is hosting its next fundraiser tomorrow, Saturday, May 21, at the Berlin Treasures Flea Market. Tables are available for $20, $10 of which will go directly to the kids and the Little League. The Little League needs to sell a minimum of 14 tables and as many as 20 tables. In addition, the Little League is hosting a bake sale at the same time and parents and volunteers are needed to help coordinate the events.
