BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity softball team on Wednesday beat visiting Mardela, 6-3, after a late three-run homer by freshman Taylor Black.
The Seahawks jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and doubled the advantage with a three-run homer by Black in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mardela came right back, however, with a lead-off single and triple to start the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 6-2. After a Warrior reached on an apparent ground-out when the Decatur first basemen’s foot pulled off the bag, followed by a walk, Mardela had the bases loaded and no outs while trailing 6-2.
However, Decatur pitcher Maddie Justice struck out the next batter before yielding a one-out base hit to allow Mardela to cut the lead to 6-3. Justice got a force out at home and a ground out to short to end the threat and the Seahawks hung on for the 6-3 win.
