Decatur Girls Bow Out of States

11/11/2011 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s girls’ varsity soccer team bowed out of the state Class 3A-East tournament last week, falling to Reservoir, 3-0, in the region semifinals to close out what was otherwise another great season.

The Seahawks, seeded third in the 3A-East tournament, got off to a good start last Tuesday, edging 11th seeded Howard, 2-1, in their opener. However, Decatur ran into a buzz saw against 10-seeded Reservoir, falling 3-0 last Friday.

For Decatur, the loss either fell into the missed opportunity category or the misery loves company category as all of the top seeds in the 3A-East region were upset along the way. Top-seeded River Hill lost its second round game against ninth-seeded Atholton, while number-two seed Centennial fell to 10th-seeded Reservoir. As a result, fifth-seeded Mt. Hebron will face 10th-seeded Reservoir in the region finals.

The loss in the region semifinals did little to tarnish what was a successful season for the young Decatur team, which finished with a 7-5-1 record. It was a topsy-turvy season for the Seahawks, which never won more than two in a row and never lost more than two in a row.
