BERLIN- Somewhat lost amidst the highly successful seasons being turned in by Stephen Decatur's spring sports teams is the men's varsity tennis team, which won three more matches in the last week in impressive fashion to improve to 10-0 on the season including a 8-0 record in the Bayside Conference.
Lacrosse, baseball and softball typically garner the most attention around the Decatur campus each spring, but the men's varsity tennis team is quietly building a budding dynasty of sorts over on the courts. The team is undefeated thus far this year at 9-0, following a perfect season last year during which the Seahawks compiled an overall record of 17-0 including a 12-0 conference mark.
The Seahawks, led by new coach Steve Berquist, stayed on a roll this week, beating Wicomico, 7-0, to improve to 10-0 on the season. James Pack, Andrew Murrell, Vinny Varsalona, Jimmy Simons and Dakota Marchio won singles matches, while the doubles team of John Grimes and Logan Rodriguez and Matt Stocker and Kyle Rodriguez won their matches.
The 7-0 win was the second straight for the Decatur boys and one of several on the season for the Seahawks. Last Friday, Decatur beat Washington, 7-0, behind singles wins by Pack, Murrell, Varsalona, Simons, and Grimes. Decatur's doubles teams also enjoyed a big day with Logan Rodriguez-Dakota Marchio and Matt Stocker-Kyle Rodriguez picking up wins. Before that, the Seahawks earned another win last week, beating cross-town rival Worcester Prep as number-one singles player James Pack picked up a win.
