Future Seahawks Shine at State Meet

BERLIN- While Stephen Decatur’s varsity wrestling team was winning its eighth straight Bayside Conference championship last weekend, the program’s future stars were collecting more than their fair share of championship hardware in the Maryland State Wrestling Association’s East Region Novice Tournament in Baltimore.

Dozens of Junior Seahawks competed in the state tournament at Loyola-Blakefield High School in Baltimore last Sunday and the future Decatur wrestling stars collected five individual championships, finished second in six other divisions and weight classes and placed in several others. Under the direction of Decatur Head Coach Kevin Gilligan and his talented team of coaches, the future of the Seahawks’ program looks bright with potential future stars already in the pipeline.

Decatur’s Griffin Luzier was the state champion in the Bantam Division’s 50-pound class, while Aiden Ciurca was champ in the Bantam Division’s 52-pound class. Jagger Clapsadle earned state championship honors in the Intermediate Division’s 55-pound class, while Anthony Caruso was champion in the Intermediate Division’s 75-pound class. Andrew Baker was champion in the Schoolboy Division’s 89-pound class.

In the Tots Division, Decatur’s Jay Wimbrow was runner-up in the heavyweight division, while Anthony Angelo finished third in the lightweight division. Noah Reho was third in the Bantam Division’s 50-pound class and Chase Pillsbury was fourth in the Bantam Division’s 65-pound class. Caleb Myers was runner-up in the Bantam Division’s 55-pound class behind champion Jagger Clapsadle, while Rhian Silsey finished fourth.

Decatur’s Joseph Lockwood was the runner-up in the Intermediate 64-pound class, while James Parsons was fourth and Lockelan Crowe was fifth. Kamden Peters was fourth in the Intermediate 66-pound class, Nicholas Angelo was third in the Intermediate 68-pound class, Rafe Parsons was fourth in the 75-pound class, Zion Shockley was runner-up in the Intermediate 99-pound class, while Zackary Tronsky was fourth.

In the Novice Division, Joshua Lawson was runner-up in the 59-pound class. Collin Terlizzi was third in the 67-pound class, while Lawson was fourth. John Adams was fourth at 74-pounds, Conner Carpenter was third at 95 pounds, and Noah Jasilaitis was fourth at 106.

In the Schoolboy Division, Jake Clapsadle was third in the 82-pound class, Max Pyles was runner-up in the 118-135-pound class, Chase Cropper was third at 147 and Ernest Shockley was third at 166.
