Host Decatur Finishes Second in War on Shore

12/14/2007 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity wrestling team enjoyed a great weekend hosting the 6th Annual War on Shore tournament, finishing a close second to Baltimore powerhouse Mount St. Joseph as a team and placing several individual grapplers in their respective weight classes.

The Seahawks came in second in the sixth annual event featuring some of the best high school wrestling programs from several states in the mid-Atlantic region. Traditional wrestling powerhouse Mount St. Joseph finished atop the team standings with 194.5 total points with Decatur finishing a close second with 182.5 points. Rounding out the top five were Sussex Central, Smyrna and La Plata.

For six years, Decatur has hosted the War on the Shore tournament, which attracts the top high school programs from Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and even Pennsylvania this year. This years version was the last at the Berlin school, however, as the size and popularity of the event has necessitated a move to the Ocean City Convention Center next year.

While the Seahawks made a great showing in the team standings, several individual wrestlers placed high in their individual weight classes. For example, Decatur's Skylar Snead won the 135-pound class individual title, while Danny Miller came in second in the 215-pound class.

Other notable finishes for the Seahawks included Danny Banks coming in third in the 125-pound class, Corey Tobias finishing fourth in the 112-pound class, Vinny Artrip (5th- 119), Mark Bargar (5th-189), James Reid (5th- 285), and Sean McGarry (6th- 130). The annual tournament provides the perfect barometer for the rock-solid Decatur wrestling program to gage their early season success against some of the best talent in the region, and based on a strong showing last weekend, it appears the Seahawks are ready to defend their District crown for the seventh year in a row and their region championship title for a third straight year.
