Seahawks Fall To Kent Island, 9-8

4/18/2008 | By News Editor, Shawn J. Soper

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's men's varsity lacrosse team lost its first game of the season last week, a gut-wrenching 9-8 loss at home to Kent Island on Friday.

Something had to give last Friday when Decatur, unbeaten and atop the Bayside South standings, took on Kent Island, which was also unbeaten and led the Bayside North division. Kent Island jumped out to an early lead and led 5-1 at the half before Decatur mounted a ferocious second half comeback that fell just short as time expired.

Decatur's Paul Kramer and Nick Hogan scored two straight goals in the third quarter during a three-minute, non-releasable game misconduct penalty by Kent Island's Nick Schneider, who scored four times in the contest. Kramer scored a short time later to tie the game at 5-5 and the comeback was complete just before the third quarter ended.

However, Kent Island scored two quick goals early in the fourth quarter to go back on top 7-5. Decatur had the answer again, however, tying the game at 7-7 on goals by Kramer and Logan West. Kent Island took the lead again on two straight goals to make it 9-7, including a fourth and final goal by Schneider.

However, the game was not quite over yet. Decatur's Calvin Snyder scored with 32 seconds left to the cut the lead to 9-8, but the Seahawks could not get another look and the clock expired.
