Seahawks Top Eagles for First Win
BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's girls' varsity basketball had an up and down run recently, beating county rival Snow Hill in the annual John Coleman Christmas Tournament last week for its first win of the season, followed by a pair of losses this week.
The Seahawks got in the win column for the first time this year with a narrow 39-37 win over Worcester County rival Snow Hill in the final round of the 2008 John Coleman Christmas Tournament. The annual tournament, named for long-time Worcester County Public Schools Administrator John Coleman, has become one of the highlights of the high school basketball schedule over the years. This year's event marked a return to tradition with the three county public high schools, Decatur, Snow Hill and Pocomoke, competing along with Nandua from Virginia.
The Seahawks dropped their opener in the tournament with a 53-21 loss to Pocomoke in the first round, but rallied to beat Snow Hill, 39-37, in its second game for its first win of the season. With each passing game, the Seahawks continue to show signs of improvement, but wins will likely be hard to come by in the second half of the season.
In the first two games of 2009, Decatur fell to Delaware power Indian River, 45-23, last Friday after falling behind, 13-0, after the first quarter and 23-9 at the half. On Tuesday, the Seahawks dropped their second game of 2009, falling to Washington, 62-40.
