Decatur Girls Steal Dramatic Win

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's girls' varsity lacrosse team won a wild one at home on Tuesday, giving up the lead with time running out and tying the game in the waning seconds before taking care of business in overtime to escape with a 14-12 win over Queen Anne's.

The Seahawks entered the game with a 4-1 conference record and a tenuous hold on the top of the standings in the Bayside South, but Queen Anne's from the Bayside North always presents challenges. Decatur led for much of the contest before the Lions scored a goal with under two minutes remaining to take an 11-10 lead.

With the clock on the field, Decatur won the ensuing draw at midfield and quickly forced the ball into the Lions' defensive end in a desperate attempt to tie the game. After moving the ball around perimeter, a dropped pass seemed to end the Seahawks' threat, but Nicole Dougan scooped up the loose ball and fired a low shot into the corner past the Lions' goalkeeper to somehow tie the game at 11-11 as time expired.

With a new lease on life, the Seahawks then took care of business in the overtime period. Leigh Anne Flounlacker, who had already scored five goals in regulation, took matters into her own hands in overtime, scoring three more times to hand the Seahawks the dramatic 14-12 overtime win.

Flounlacker scored the first goal of the extra session on a direct penalty shot to give the Seahawks a 12-11 win. The prolific scorer then took a nice feed from Taylor Blazer and found the back of the net to give the Seahawks some breathing room at 13-11. After Queen Anne's cut the lead to 13-12, Flounlacker was again fouled in the box and converted the direct penalty shot to finish off her big day with her eighth goal to give Decatur the big 14-12 win.

The win was the third in a row for Decatur since falling to Worcester Prep in a non-conference game nearly two weeks ago. Last Wednesday, Decatur beat Bennett, 15-9, as Bethany Howe scored four goals, Madalyn Schnader scored three and Flounlacker and Sarah Wooten scored two each. Last Friday, the Seahawks crushed Wicomico, 23-2, led by four goals from Lexi Nathan and three by Howe.
