Mallards Remain Unbeaten at 5-0

9/25/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Worcester Prep's boys' varsity soccer team remained unbeaten this week, cruising past visiting Salisbury School on Tuesday to improve to 5-0 on the season.

The Mallards jumped out to an early lead on Tuesday and steadily built their lead throughout the contest to finish with a 5-1 win. Worcester's Fausto DiCarlo scored with just over 12 minutes left in the first half to stake Worcester to a 1-0 early lead. At the 26:34 mark in the first, Andrew Ternahan fired a shot from the perimeter that found the back of the net to improve the lead to 2-0, which is how the first half ended.

Just 22 seconds into the second half, Worcester's Martin Sanchez scored on a fast break to extend the lead to 3-0, and DiCarlo scored his second goal of the game with just over 31 minutes left in the game to push the lead to 4-0. About four minutes later, Salisbury School got on the board on a direct penalty kick to cut the lead to 4-1 with a lot of time still left in the game, but that was as close as the Dragons would get. Worcester's Tom Thornett scored with just over 20 minutes left in the game to end the scoring at 5-1.

DiCarlo led the Mallards with two goals, while Sanchez, Ternahan and Thornett each added single tallies. Michael Dayton-Jones and Conor Nally each contributed with an assist.
