Seahawks Edge Parkside, Remain Unbeaten

4/16/2010 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's boys' varsity tennis team squeaked by Parkside in a battle of Bayside South frontrunners on Monday to remain unbeaten on the season.

Something had to give on Monday when the Seahawks (4-0) faced Parkside (4-0) in an early season battle of Bayside South unbeatens. For a while, it appeared Parkside would keep its record unblemished and send the Decatur to its first loss of the season before the Seahawks rallied.

Parkside went up 3-0 in the contest after sweeping two doubles matches and stealing a singles match. However, Decatur's heavyweights rallied to even the score as James Pack, Andrew Murrell and Logan Rodriguez each won their singles matches to tie the overall match at 3-0.

The run by the Seahawks set up an all-or-nothing match between Decatur anchor Dakota Marchio and Parkside's Kyle Redden. Marchio jumped out to an early lead, but Redden climbed right back in it with a couple of big rallies. In the end, however, it was Marchio pulling it out with a 9-7 win to finish the overall 40-37 win by the Seahawks to remain unbeaten on the season
