Seahawks Fall in Conference Title Match

11/06/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity volleyball team fell in the Bayside Conference championship on Tuesday, dropping three tough games to powerhouse North Caroline, but the Seahawks move on with the state regional playoffs that get underway early next week.

Decatur finished the regular season with a 13-2 record but lost to Bennett in four games last week in the season finale to finish in a virtual dead heat atop the Bayside South standings. It came to a coin toss to determine who got a chance to play unbeaten North Caroline for the conference title on Tuesday and the Seahawks prevailed.

Against Bayside North champ North Caroline on Tuesday, the Seahawks dropped the first game, 25-19, took the Bulldogs to the limit in the second game, falling 28-26, and bowed out in the third game, 25-18.

In the conference title match, Annie Winters led the Seahawks with eight kills, while Rosa Navarra had four kills and two aces. Sydney Waters added four kills and a block, while Janet Davidson pitched in two aces.

Despite the outcome in the conference title match, the Seahawks earlier in the week earned a number-4 seed in the state Class 3A-East regional tournament and will face fifth-seeded Northeast at home on Monday. Lurking on the Seahawks' side of the bracket is top-seeded Centennial.
