Worcester Boys Punctuate Perfect Season

10/30/2009 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Worcester Prep's men's varsity soccer team added icing to its perfect season cake last week, beating Salisbury School, 1-0, in the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference (ESIAC) tournament title game to finish with an unblemished record.

The Mallards wrapped up the regular season two weeks ago with a 13-0 record, leaving only the ESIAC tournament standing between them and a perfect season. The Mallards dominated all year on their way to a perfect regular season during which they outscored their opponents by 63 goals. The domination continued last week with a pair of wins in the conference tournament culminating with a narrow win over old rival Salisbury School in the title game.

On Wednesday, Worcester wasted little time in dispensing Delmarva Christian in the conference tournament semifinal, 6-0. Matt Carey led the Mallards with two goals, while Andrew Ternahan, Ryan McGuire, Brandon Thaler and Harrison Brennan each added single tallies.

In the other semifinal, Salisbury School beat Gunston Day, 5-2, to set up the conference tournament championship game with Worcester. The Mallards had beaten the Dragons twice during the regular season, including a 4-0 win on the road and a 5-1 win at home. In the title game last Friday, Worcester's Martin Sanchez scored a first half goal that was all the Mallards would need. Worcester held on throughout the second half and came away with the 1-0 win to claim the conference tournament championship and complete the perfect season.
