Decatur Volleyball Remains Unbeaten

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur's varsity volleyball team remained unbeaten this week, beating visiting Wicomico, 3-1, on Monday to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Seahawks won the first game, 25-20, and edged Wicomico, 25-23, in the second game to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. Wicomico topped Decatur, 25-22, in third game to pull closer, but the Seahawks prevailed 25-15 in the decisive fourth game to prevail in the match.

Despite the loss in a nail biter in the third game, the Seahawks were in control of the match from the outset. They cruised to a relatively easy win in the fourth game to take three out of four from the Indians in front of a noisy bipartisan crowd. After the winning the first two games, the Seahawks got off to a good early start against Wicomico in the third and led by as many as six points on different occasions during the game.

Wicomico went on a big run in the third game to tie it at 20-20. The two teams swapped points late in the game with neither gaining more than a one point advantage until the Indians finished strong and won 25-22. With Decatur up on Wicomico two games to one the Seahawks left little to chance in the fourth and decisive match, going on a big early run to decide the outcome.

The score in the fourth game was tied at 3-3 before the Seahawks went on the decisive run, holding serve for 10 straight points to go up 13-3. The two teams exchanged points through the middle of the contest and Wicomico made no dent in the Seahawk lead. The Indians eventually went on a mini-run and cut the lead to eight points at 22-14, but Decatur pulled away to secure the game, 25-15, and the match, 2-1.

Decatur got offensive production all over the court with Crystal Scanlon recording 15 service points and seven aces; Kristin Lubeski with six service points and seven kills; Destiny Rounds with six service points and 20 assists; and Olivia Turner with eight service points and eight kills.

The victory was the first conference win for the Seahawks, who improved their overall record to 4-0. Decatur traveled to Parkside last night for a match played too late to be included in this edition. The Seahawks will host county rival at home on Monday
