Tough Pitching Sinks Seahawks

4/13/2012 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Stephen Decatur’s varsity softball team ran into a tough pitcher on Tuesday, falling to visiting Parkside at home, 3-0, to fall to 3-6 on the season.

The Seahawks could get little going offensively on Tuesday against Parkside starter Brittney Donald, who struck out nine and scattered five hits. Decatur fell behind, 3-0, early and the Rams made the early runs stand up the rest of the way as the Seahawks couldn’t push a run across despite a few opportunities.

For example, in the bottom of the fifth, Abbey Schorr singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Michelle Harris then grounded to third for the second out of the inning, but the runners advanced to second and third. Taylor Black scorched a hard grounder to third, but the Parkside fielder was able to fire to first for the put-out to end the Decatur threat.

In the bottom of the seventh, still trailing 3-0, the Seahawks got another opportunity. After the leadoff batter was retired, Beth Laque reached on an error and Schorr hit a bloop single to put runners on first and second with one out. Laque and Schorr moved up to second and third, but Donald was able to strike out the last two Seahawk batters to strand the runners in scoring position and end the game at 3-0.
