Worcester Girls Win Three Straight

10/17/2008 | By Shawn J. Soper, Sports Editor

BERLIN- Worcester Prep's girls' varsity soccer team completed its late season turnaround this week, winning three straight games including a 2-1 in over Salisbury Christian on Tuesday to improve to 6-6 on the season.

The Mallards struggled somewhat early as the young team tried to find some continuity. Worcester started the season with two straight losses before winning its first game back on September 12 against Seaford Christian. After that victory, the Mallards lost three straight to fall to 1-5 on the season, but the team finished strong to get back to the .500 mark.

The remarkable turnaround began last Friday when the Mallards beat visiting Gunston on Homecoming at the Berlin campus, but it wasn't easy. The Worcester girls needed two overtime periods to outlast pesky Gunston, 4-2.

Buoyed by the big win on Friday, Worcester went on the road on Monday to face Seaford Christian and the result was very similar to the first contest between the two schools. The Mallards beat Seaford Christian, 8-0, in September at home, and won again on Monday by a comfortable 7-0 margin. Jackie Wangel scored two goals, while Sibel Tekman, Kelly Meiser, Elizabeth Twilley, Shelby Zimmer and Michelle Wangel each added single goals.

Back in action on Tuesday, again on the road against Salisbury Christian, the Mallards won their third straight by a score of 2-1. Jackie Wangel and Carson Wigley each scored single tallies for Worcester in the contest. Worcester's third straight win and fifth out of the last six allowed the Mallards to finish the regular season at .500 with a 6-6 mark.
