BERLIN- Stephen Decatur wrestling and football standout Danny Miller this week signed a letter of intent to attend and wrestle at the U.S. Naval Academy next year, following in the footsteps of other Seahawks in recent years to move on to the prestigious university.
Miller, a two-time defending state champion, on Monday officially signed a letter of intent for Navy during a brief press conference at Decatur. He has been a standout on the Seahawk football team for three years and could likely play that sport at the next level, but the wrestling mat is where he has really made his mark at Decatur.
At the War on the Shore tournament hosted by Decatur earlier this month, Miller collected his 100th career victory and is on pace to set the Seahawks' record for wins. Last week, Miller won the title in his weight class at the Lackey Invitational in Southern Maryland. The school record for wins is 122 set by Trevor Rickett, a number Miller should eclipse this season.
Along with numerous other achievements, Miller is a two-time defending state champion, winning the state 2A/1A two years ago before collecting another state title last year in the 4A/3A tournament when Decatur moved up. His record last year was a gaudy 48-2. While Miller has made his mark on the football field and wrestling mat at Decatur, his achievements in the classroom are no less impressive. He currently maintains a 4.8 weighted grade point average.
Miller is the latest standout Seahawk athlete to head to Navy. Two years ago, football standout Matt Molloy moved on to Navy and has seen considerable playing time as a sophomore as a back-up on the offensive line. Last year, Decatur soccer and lacrosse standout accepted an invitation to attend and play lacrosse at Navy and is expected to make an immediate impact this spring.
