Riley Mears, a 2nd grader at Showell Elementary, won 1st place in the Elks 2007-2008 Americanism Poster Contest, "My Favorite Symbol of America" for ages 6 & 7 sponsored by the Ocean City, Maryland Elks Lodge #2645. She also won 1st place at the South East District Level where she competed with over 600 poster entries. Riley told reporters, "I chose to draw myself holding the American flag because it is my favorite symbol of America. Most children recognize it to mean freedom for us." The Elks organization holds this Americanism poster to instill the spirit of American patriotism in children.
